Got one of my lenses stolen from check-in luggage during Kenya Airway’s flight from Nairobi to Mumbai. I know it’s not smart to keep equipment in check-in luggage but I can’t carry everything on a plane. I usually carry on 2 camera bodies, 2 lenses and a laptop with me so I can still do my job even if the check-in luggage gets lost somewhere. The rest of equipment goes in check-in luggage with closing, sleeping bag…etc.

I called the airline but they said they were not liable because I didn’t report the case before leaving airport. Well, I am wondering how many people would open their check-in luggage and make sure everything is there before leaving the airport to head home.

During my 15 years as a professional photographer, I have never had a thing stolen from my checked-in bag but I guess I was just very lucky.

It’s a quite big loss of $1200 for a starving freelancer.

Joe - Well, Kuni in Africa things like this do happen and you need to be equally wary of checked-in luggage in India. $1200 is a lot of money…and I suppose the folk who stole the lens won’t even know the value, such a pity.

Kuni Takahashi - Well said…It’s a photographer’s dilemma how we carry our equipment for traveling. Obviously, we can’t carry “everything” as carry-on. Some equipment have to be checked in. There are some useful responses in lightstalers if you are interested in –
