Yesterday was a long day.
After spending whole morning with street kids, I swung by the parliament building to see if there were any crowd gathering as the deadline for extension of the term of the parliament, the Constituent Assembly (CA), approaches at midnight. Since the assembly failed to draft the country’s new constitution, it was crucial to extend to the life of parliament so they can continue to work for building new government.
The Maoist, major opposition party, had been demanding the resignation of the prime minister as a precondition for the extension of CA but the prime minister had been refusing it. If they weren’t able to come up with an agreement by midnight, it could put the county into deep political mess and potentially violent reaction by disappointed and frustrated people were expected.
After making a few frames of demonstrators, I headed back to my hotel room to file the photos then went back out again.
If they were coming to conclusion, I was hoping it happens earlier in the afternoon instead of waiting until midnight. But of course it was nothing more than just my hope. I ended up being there until midnight.
The government reached the agreement a bit before 12am. The prime minister agreed to step down but no certain date was set. Several of my Nepalese friends told me earlier that the government tend to compromise at the last minutes. They were right about it.
Unlike the previous day in which the NY Times picked up one of my photos, I wasn’t able to make any sales despite a long day of heard working.

昨日は長い一日だった。
午前中一杯ストリートチルドレン達と過ごした後、国会議事堂に寄ってみる。制憲議会の任期失効が午前０時に迫っており、そろそろデモをおこなう人々が集まり始めているかと思ったからだ。ネパールの新憲法作成を期限内におこなえなかった制憲議会の延長を巡って、ここ数ヶ月のあいだ政党間の話し合いが続けられていたが、それもこの日が最後。国民注目の日だ。
野党第一党のマオイスト（共産党毛沢東派）は当初から首相の辞任を制憲議会の任期延長の条件としていたが、首相はそれに応じず、話し合いは硬直状態になっていた。もし深夜の期限までに合意がえられなければ、議会をなくした国家は政治的に大混乱に陥り、失望した国民による暴動も懸念されていた。
議事堂前に集まる人々の様子を一通り撮影した後、一旦ホテルに戻り写真を電送。そのあとまた急いで議事堂前にとんぼ返りする。
もし話し合いが合意に至るのならば、早いうちにしてもらいたいなあと思っていたのだが、現実はそううまくはいかない。結局深夜まで議事堂前にいることになった。政党は深夜０時前にようやく合意に達し、とりあえず混乱は避けられた。明確な月日は定められなかったが、とりあえず首相が辞任に同意したのだ。ネパールの友人たちが、政党はいつも最後のぎりぎりのところまでお互い妥協しない、といっていたが、彼らは正しかったようだ。
前日はニューヨーク・タイムスに写真が掲載されたので助かったが、昨日は長い一日だったにも関わらず売り上げなし。
