Since my arrival in Islamabad on Monday night, I had been quite busy with assignments and didn’t have time to explore the city until yesterday. After sending 20 pictures to the clients, I met a driver whose name was given to me by my colleague and we headed out in the afternoon.
Islamabad was newly developed in the 60′s and it is well planned, very clean city. Especially coming from chaotic Mumbai, I was shocked how clean the city was when I first arrived here in several days ago. It’s nice to be in clean and organized city which makes daily life much easier but on the other hand, it’s kind of boring and the landscape is not really attractive visually. So I asked driver to take me to Rawalpindi, the older capital city next to Islamabad. This is also where Benazir Bhutto was assassinated nearly three years ago.
I was snapping around old-fashioned market, spending time with kids playing a game I have never seen before, kind of like one-leg sumo wrestling, and having my favorite sweet chai (milk tea) on the street. It was nice break for me. Oh, I also found a cinema which shows “adult-only” movies. I was quite surprised by this discovery in the Islamic country but the driver told me that hugging and kissing are as far as they go. No one in the movies would be naked. Of course, this is Pakistan! But I am still curious to confirm it by my own eyes…

月曜の夜にイスラマバードに到着してからずっとアサインメントの仕事に追われる毎日。ようやく昨日少し時間ができたので写真を２０枚程新聞社に電送してから、友人から紹介されたドライバーを雇って午後の町に繰り出した。
イスラマバードは６０年代に新首都としての都市計画によってつくられた新しい都市で、その町並みは整然として実にきれい。特に混沌を地でいくムンバイから来た僕にとっては、このイスラマバードの整然さはショックだった。しかし、渋滞もほとんどないし、きれいで住みやすいのは確かだが、反面退屈でもあり、写真的にも全然面白くない。そんなわけで、僕はドライバーに頼み隣町で旧首都でもあるラワルピンディへと連れて行ってもらった。ここは３年近く前、パキスタンの元首相ベーナズィール・ブットーが暗殺された場所でもある。
車を降りて、しばらく昔ながらの市場を散策し、これまでみたことのない片足相撲のような遊びをしていた子供達と時間を過ごして、道ばたで好物のチャイ（ミルクティー）を嗜む。。。たかだか数時間ではあったが、いいリフレッシュになった。ああ、それからひとつ面白かったのが、なんとアダルトムービーを上映している映画館を発見。このイスラム教の国で？と、僕はかなり驚いたが、ドライバーの言うことにはせいぜい抱擁とキスどまり。服を脱ぐことはない、という。やっぱりね。。。ここはパキスタン。しかし正直なところ、自分の眼で確かめたい気もするな。
