A few days ago, I got a call from a young film director whom I met last month during a mutual friend’s wedding.
He told me that he needed some photos in a presentation for production companies to raise funds for a new movie. It was a volunteer job with no compensation for my labor.
I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to say yes to him since I have been quite busy these days (not necessarily with photo assignments but more with writing…A book of mine is scheduled to be published sometime early next year) and I don’t really have extra time for volunteer work.
But I ended up taking the opportunity just because I have never shot for film and I thought it could be an interesting experience. Also, I got a good feeling about the director who seems to be sincere and passionate about his work.
The photo shoot went from midnight to around six in the morning. It was quite long but actually a majority of the time was spent on make-up for the actor.
I won’t mention details of the film here but it is about a man who transforms to a woman to realize his fantasy to ride in the “woman-only” compartment of the commuter train. In the train, he meets a woman…
The main character was played by an actor who had a role in the Academy Award-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire.” I didn’t know he was the one I was supposed to photograph until that night. It was quite a surprise!
Anyway, the shoot went well and I enjoyed the time with such professional people.
Needless to say, I would love to see the film get to the theatres. Hopefully my visual contribution will help raise a few bucks.

数日前、先月おこなわれた友人の結婚式で出会ったばかりの若い映画監督から電話がかかってきた。
新たに創りたい映画の資金集めのためのプレゼンテーション用に使う写真を撮ってほしいという。資金が無いので、撮影料は払えないとのこと。
ここの所ずっと忙しく（とはいっても撮影の仕事ではなく、来年始めに出版される予定の本の執筆に追われている）ボランティアの仕事にかける時間などないんだけどなあ、というのが正直な思いだったのだが、それでも結局引き受けることにした。
映画のため（とはいえ単なるプレゼン用だが）の撮影などこれまでやったことはなかったし、面白い経験にはなるかな、と思ったからだ。さらに、この誠実そうな若い監督と話してみて、彼の映画づくりに対する情熱に好感がもてたということもある。
撮影は深夜から始まり、なんと朝６時までかかる長丁場になったが、実はその大部分は俳優のメークアップや衣装費やされたようなものだった。
ここでは詳しく述べないが、この映画の概要はこんなところだ。ある若い男がずっと持ち続けてきた彼の欲望を満たすために、女装をして通勤電車の「女性専用車両」に乗り込む。そしてそこで一人の女性と出会う。。。
この映画の主役は、アカデミー賞を受賞したあの「スラムドッグ・ミリオネアー」にも出演しており、なかなかの有名どころ。実はこのことは撮影当日まで知らなかったので、ちょっとびっくり。
ともあれ撮影は無事に終わり、僕は監督やこの俳優をはじめとしたプロ精神に満ちた人たちとのひとときを楽しんだ。
やはりこうして自分も関わったからには、是非この映画が撮影され、封切りになることを祈りたい。僕のボランティア仕事もそのための資金集めに役立ってくれれば嬉しいことだ。
