Returned to Libya a week ago after spending six weeks in tsunami-hit Japan. I didn’t plan to come back to the country but luckily got an assignment which put me back here for a month.
Unlike when I was here last time in Feb/March, the access to the frontline near Brega is strictly controlled by the rebels. All civilians including foreign journalists are ordered to turn around at the checkpoint. I suspect that they probably have something they don’t want to show us – like western special force guys on the ground. So I am not seeing much “bang bang” this time. Instead, I have more time to talk to the locals and have found out a few interesting things about the country which I didn’t know before.
Here are some things I learnt -
- Until early 90’s, there were no fruits, like bananas or no chocolates at the shop. These things were considered as “luxury items” under Gadhafi regime and unless you smuggled them, you couldn’t buy them at local markets.
- Any T-shirts with English printing were banned until early 2000.
- You couldn’t choose the design or size of the clothes you were buying. You purchased a “bag of clothes” and you didn’t quite know what’s inside. So, there were many customers outside the shop trying to exchange the contents to find ones that fit.
Hard to believe these stories but they were in fact true. Not too much happening now in Benghazi and hopefully at least I will find more amusing stories about life under Gadhafi.

１週間程前にリビアに戻ってきた。正直言ってまたこの国に戻って来るかわからなかったのだが、幸運にもアサインメントがとれたので、今回はちょっと長めの１ヶ月程の滞在になる。
２ヶ月前とはうってかわって、反カダフィ派によって戦闘の前線へのアクセスが厳しく制限されており、一般市民やジャーナリストはまったく立ち入ることができない。あくまで私見だが、イギリスかフランスの特殊部隊が入っていて、それをジャーナリストに見せたくないんじゃないかと推測している。
まあ現在は戦闘自体も３．４日おきに砲弾の応酬をするくらいで、ほとんど硬直状態になっているようだが、それでも今回は全く前線に足を踏み入れていない。その代わりというわけではないが、フィーチャーの撮影をしながら一般人たちと接する機会はかなり増えて、これまで知らなかったなかなか面白い話も耳にできるようになった。
そんな話しをいくつか −
＊ ９０年代はじめまで、バナナをはじめとしたフルーツや、チョコレートなどは店頭で手に入らなかった。これらのものはカダフィ曰く「贅沢品」であり、個人的に密輸しない限り、店頭では買えなかった。
＊ 英語のプリントされたＴシャツもタブー。２０００年代はじめまで手に入らなかった。
＊ 服を買うときも自分で選ぶことはできず、ただすでに袋に入ったものを渡されるだけ。正確に何が入っているかはわからないので、店の外で欲しいものや自分に合ったサイズのものと客同士が交換しあっていた。
本当かね？というようは話しばかりだが、それが現実の生活だったらしい。現在は政局の動きも少なく、ある意味退屈なのでせめて滞在中にもっと面白い話しが聞けることを期待しようと思う。
