I have been in Afghanistan for about 10 days now and am just finishing up a short embed with the U.S Army in the eastern part of the country. Since I am on assignment, I can’t post any pix here until they are published (or they get killed).
So I am uploading several pix I shot a little while ago in Srinagar in Kashmir.
The last consecutive three years, the region suffered numerous violent clashes between the Indian military and separatists who have been fighting for autonomy or independence. The city has shut down many times and more than 100 civilians have been killed.
After those bitter years, finally peace seems to have arrived this summer.
All shops are open on the main street and the houseboats along Dal Lake, Srinigar’s signature accommodations, are filled with tourists. The city seems to be full of life.
Although the root of the problem hasn’t been solved and I am afraid to say that this violence-free season is most likely temporary, people are enjoying and taking full advantage of it.
Kashmir is, in fact, quite a beautiful place. Every time I visit here, I enjoy the clean air and spectacular mountain scenery. I have met many warm-hearted Kashmiris and that left me with good memories.
It may still be a long road ahead until the region achieves permanent peace, but I certainly wish to see the day soon.

アフガニスタンにきて１０日が経ち、今日ちょうど米軍との短期の従軍を終えるところだ。今回は新聞社のアサインメントで来ているので、ストーリーが完結するまではブログには写真が掲載できない。そんなわけで少し前に撮ったカシミールの首都スリナガールでの写真をいくつかアップしようと思う。
スリナガールでは、過去３年間連続でインド軍とカシミール分離勢力の間で激しい武力衝突が起こってきた。町は閉鎖状態となり、１００人以上の市民が犠牲になった。
そんな暗黒のような３年間から抜け出したかの如く、今年は平和な状態が続いている。
目抜き通りの商店や露天商は客で賑わい、スリナガールの名物的な宿泊施設とも言えるハウスボートは観光客でいっぱいだ。今年の夏、町は活気に溢れている。
しかし、インド政府と分離主義勢力とのあいだの問題は根本的には何も解決したわけではなく、残念ながら、この平和がいつまで続くかは疑問の残るところだ。それでも、人々は久しぶりの「平和な夏」を十分に満喫しているようだった。
カシミールは美しい土地だ。僕もここを訪れる度に澄んだ空気と壮大な山々の景色を満喫し、ここで出会った心暖かい人々たちは思い出に残り続けている。
カシミールに本当の平和が訪れるまでにはまだ年月がかかるかも知れない。それでも、その日が一日も早く来ることを願わずにはいられない。
