Never ending tragedy – suicide attacks in Afghanistan

 

Two major suicide attacks happened within a week.

The scenes of these bombings were gruesome. Body parts were scattered. Blood was all over. Inside the British Council, one gunman kept fighting against security forces for hours. When several injured were carried out, I had to point my ruthless lens toward them. Some were showing a painful expression and some were bleeding badly, not even moving a bit.

Every time I encounter this kind of violence, it makes me wonder and I feel helpless anger toward whoever “created” these terrorists.

Most of the suicide bombers were very poor and uneducated lower class people.  They were taken advantage of and being brainwashed by some mastermind to carry out a “holy mission”

What if the government was functioning better and people had more opportunities for jobs and education? I bet the recruitment rates for these terrorists would be a lot lower.

This is one of the reasons why fighting against terrorism is not so simple as “killing bad guys.” Unless the country gets lifted up from the bottom and people get better life and opportunities, terrorists will just keep getting “produced” one after another.

ここ１週間のうちに、２度大きな自爆テロがあった。

ひとつめはここから５０キロほど北のパルワン州知事の事務所が、そして一昨日はカブールのブリティッシュ・カウンシルが標的になったが、両事件とも５、６人のテロリストがチームになっての複数の自爆攻撃で、パルワン州では２０人、カブールでは１０人が犠牲になった。

吹き飛んだ手足が転がり、地面に血の染み渡ったテロの現場は凄惨なものだ。ブリティッシュ・カウンシルでは、ゲートを突破した犯人の一人がその後数時間に渡って建物内に立てこもり、兵士たちとのあいだで激しい撃ち合いが続けられた。多量の出血で息も絶えだえになっているような怪我人たちが運び出されて来るたびに、僕はその姿に非情なレンズを向けざるを得なくなる。

こんなテロの現場の撮影をするたびに、どうにもやり場の無い怒りを感じてしまう。それは、自爆テロリストたちを「製造」する裏の人間たちに対するものだ。

多くの自爆テロリストたちは、もともと教育も受けることのできない貧困層の人間たちだ。無教養の彼らは簡単に洗脳され、「崇高な使命」を果たすテロリストへと仕立て上げられていく。

もし政府がもっと機能していて、彼らに仕事や教育の機会が与えられていたら？テロリストのリクルート率はぐっと低くなっているはずだろう。

これが、テロとの戦い、というものが、 単に「悪者を殺す」だけの単純なものではない理由のひとつでもある。社会の底辺に生活する多くの人々に、ある程度の仕事や教育の機会を与えられるような政策がとられない限り、テロリストは「製造」され続けていくのだ。
