While I was in Kabul, Afghanistan, I visited the country’s first bowling alley with my local photographer friend who told me about the place.
I was quite surprised when I first heard about this place. Afghanistan and bowling – I just couldn’t put these two things together. Despite my skepticism, the alley, named “The Strikers”, was quite impressive. Funky blue and green lights illuminate the shiny lanes and Afghans of all age – kids to grandpa – were enjoying throwing the colorful balls. Obviously, very few of them have played the sport before and the way they tossed the balls was awkward and sometimes funny. But that didn’t matter. The point is they were having fun and yes they all were having great time.
To make the story more impressive, the owner of the alley is a young Afghan woman, 28-year-old Meena Rahmani. Rahmani, who grew up as refugee in Pakistan and Canada. She came back to Afghanistan and built the bowling alley last year to offer Afghans a place to relax and enjoy themselves in this war-torn country.
It’s encouraging to see Afghan woman like her who have the spirit to challenge the staus quo. I hope she becomes a good role model for young Afghan females who want to expand their role and be successful in this conservative society. As more women follow Rahmani’s path, Afghanistan will slowly change.

カブルに滞在中、地元のカメラマンの友人からアフガニスタン初のボーリング場ができたとの話をきいたので覗きにいってきた。
アフガニスタンとボーリング、という二つがなんだか自分の中でしっくりと結びつかなかったのだが、これがなかなかの人気。「ストライカーズ」という名のこのボーリング場の室内は青や緑の派手なイルミネーションに照らされ、レーンでは子供からじいさんまでカラフルなボールを投げ一喜一憂している。ほとんどの客たちはボーリングなど初めての経験のようで、フォームもなんだかぎこちなく、それがまたコミカルでもあるのだが、そんなことはおかまいなし。みな初めてのゲームを楽しんでいる。
これだけでも面白い話だが、さらに興味深いことに、この施設のオーナーが若いアフガン女性だということだ。２８歳のミーナさんは家族と共に避難民としてパキスタン、そしてカナダで育ったが、故郷のアフガニスタンに戻り昨年秋にこのボーリング場をひらいた。
彼女のようなチャレンジ精神に溢れる女性の存在は頼もしい。保守的で閉鎖的なこの国で、女性の地位向上を目指したり、ビジネスに興味をもっている女性たちのいいお手本になることだろう。こんな女性が増えていく事によって、アフガニスタンの将来もまた少しずつ変わっていくのだと思う。
