The war and refugees - 2010. The war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the widest interstate war in modern African history. The war, centered mainly in eastern Congo, had involved 9 African nations and claimed an estimated three million lives as a result of fighting or disease and malnutrition. Fighting was fuelled by the country's vast mineral wealth.
