Railroad Slum
Despite India's rapid economic growth in recent years, large numbers of people continue to live in extreme poverty in the country’s sprawling slums. According to the United Nations, over 1.5 million people live in slums in Kolkata, India's third-largest city. Some have chosen to settle near railway stations to have access to drinking water and toilets, facilities that are not readily available elsewhere to the poor. More than 20,000 dwellers live in the slums near Park Circus station alone.
